Claim Your Business Listing in Google Maps / Google Places

Do you have a small business that you're trying to get the word out about? A larger company and trying to attract more customers? Claiming your 'free business listing' within Google Maps / Google Places is a great way to get the ball rolling! It's also great SEO (Search Engine Optimization) value, items worth noting are marked green in this post.

You'll need a GMail account in order to do this, but don't worry, this is free too! Nothing better than free marketing for your business or company! :) Once you have a GMail account, log into the Google Places Center and begin by entering your phone number to see if your business has already been listed (See image 1 in slideshow @ bottom of this post).

A. If the business does not exist:

  1. This leads to a page that will require the following input fields be filled out or edited:

    • Country
    • Company/Organization
    • Street Address
    • City/Town
    • State
    • ZIP
    • Main phone
    •  Category (great SEO opportunity for better defining the type of business)
      •  Google Notes: 'Categories are ways to classify your business that help Google show your business for the right searches. The Google Places will suggest categories that match what you type, but feel free to create your own if you don't see a category that fits your business. Make sure that the categories you choose are accurate and describe your business well. It's ok if they're specific; Google's search algorithm makes sure that users looking for a general business type, like 'book stores,' will see businesses in more specific categories too.'
  2. Optional fields are:

    • Email Address
    • Website (great SEO opportunity for adding a link to your business's website)
      • Google Notes: 'list your authoritative business website as your homepage, since Google uses information from your homepage to help improve search results. The URL you provide can be a maximum of 255 characters.'
    • Description (great SEO opportunity to add a nice, attractive description for bringing prospective clients to your business)
      • Google Notes: 'Tell users what makes your business special.'
    • Service Areas & Location Settings:
      • No, all customers come to the business location.
      • Yes, this business serves customers at their locations
        • Checkbox for not showing business address on Google Maps
        • Either Distance from business or ZIP/City name can be chosen for areas served. (Choosing either one updates map with a coverage area outline. See example image.)
        • (great SEO opportunity to funnel in local people to your business)
    • Hours of operations (with option of not displaying operating hours)
    • Payment Options (16 different options)
    • Photos
      • (great SEO opportunity to visually appeal to end-users when they initially see your business listing within Google Maps - Separates the business from others also placed on Map - See ex. image for Pizza Hut - Logo suggested at the minimum)
      • Google Notes: 'Using Picassa or similar image hosting service is recommended' - This would also facilitate an easy central updating point if all images were referenced/pulled from a URL rather than an uploaded file.
    • Videos (Need to have been uploaded to YouTube first)
      • (great SEO opportunity if videos are informative - Customer reviews might be good to show here)
    • Additional Details
      • Ex. Parking available, Brands carried, etc.
      • SEO opportunity to list out specific targeted services of your business - See example image)
      • Google Notes: 'Create custom attributes that allow you to include additional information that you'd like customers to know. For example, you can list what brands you carry, or if your business has parking.'

B. If the business does exist: (Verification either via a postcard or phone at end of editing process)

  • Same process as above, but with an added 'verification' step. Expect either an email or phone call (your choice) from Google to verify the business listing. If you are not the person at the listed address or phone number, call or notify somebody that is to give them advance notice.
  • If there are multiple businesses that are being listed, Google offers a bulk loading option. Minimum of 10 listings are required to use this feature and up to 100 listings can be made with one Google Account ID. An excel spreadsheet works for this process (more on this here: http://www.google.com/support/places/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=28...).
  • If a business is verified by the business owner, a 'Owner-verfied listing' link appears in listing.

Miscellaneous:

  • Listings usually appear after 12 hours.
  • Google adds these items automatically (if available):
    • Reviews
    • Driving/Transportation Directions
  • Listings display across various platforms / devices
    • Desktop (Google Earth), Web Browsers, iPhone & iPad (Google Maps, Google Local, One Box), Smartphones (Mobile Maps, Google Directories), Voice/Mobile Devices (Goog-411, Directory Assistance, Google SMS).
  • Ability to also fix an incorrect marker location on Google Maps is also given when editing.
  • If there are multiple offices at the business location with different phone numbers, you can add more if needed, but one will remain as the 'main phone'.
  • With a Google Places account comes a 'Dashboard' to track impressions coming from either a 'Google' or 'OneBox' Search. 'Actions' (when 'users showed interest in your business listing') are also displayed along with 'Top search queries'. Plus 'Where driving direction requests come from' info is given. 'Offers' such as coupons or specials can also be added to appear alongside you listing in Google Maps. Paid 'Google Tags' can also be managed from this Dashboard.

Here are some images to better illustrate this valuable process for marketing your business:

Artistic Black and White Photography by Edward Weston

In this age of 'Everybody's an Artist', it's nice and refreshing to reflect on images coming from the age where there was no Adobe Photoshop, no Lightroom or Aperture computer programs to enhance your photographs. The photography of Edward Weston beckons to a time where computers were non-existant. Photographers produced their images with chemicals in the dark room, not a fancy computer screen. If there was a dark area of the image that needed to be lightened, a hand-made dodging device was usually used in the dark room to perform this task. The 'Dust and Scratches' filter in Photoshop didn't exist, instead a spotting brush was used on the final print to manually retouch an image of it's imperfections.

Edward Weston was a contemporary of Ansel Adams and was also part of the famed Group f/64 in the 1930s. He was born in 1886 in Chicago and photographed mainly in California and Mexico. Having seen his work personally, I can attest to the power of his imagery and would like to take this opportunity to point others to his body of work that is simply amazing, to say the least!

Enjoy!

On this day 20 years ago... Manchester, England... Free Trade Hall... Roy Harper...

It was cold November day in Manchester, England. The year was 1990, I was attending college at Colorado State University and we were on Thanksgiving holiday break. So no better time to pick up and leave town and head over to England, right? Well, I would have to admit, some people may have found me a little cooky for doing so, but I had set in my mind to make this trip! Why, you may ask? Well, that's a story in itself and let me begin the story...

I had recently discovered a fanzine for one of my guitar / musical / poetical heroes and had written a letter to England requesting a subscription to the quarterly fanzine put together by Darren Crisp and Dave (?), sorry forget Dave's last name, but it doesn't matter anyhow. What did matter, was that Darren was surprised to get a request from 'across the pond' for his fanzine of one, Mr. Roy Harper. I was very enthusiastic to have found a resource to read and know more about this fascinating figure in the english music scene who had recorded, played and was friends with some of my other musical heroes. To even know that there were other people interested in him, as trying to convince friends here in America that they should listen to Roy's music wasn't getting me anywhere, was so exciting to discover! People who also shared a fondness for his music and lyrics, point of view, etc. was so enthralling! Now keep in mind, this was in a time before the internet made everything accessible to everyone at any time, so it was a big deal for me to have made this discovery and share my experiences with other like-minded people. All via a printed fanzine arriving in my letter box, not 'inbox' mind you. Or a letter arriving from England from Darren keeping me up-to-date on Roy's tours, recordings, etc was very exciting at the time and I'm saddened that many younger people will never experience this as the days of 'snail mail' are gone for the most part.

So where was I? Oh yeah, getting back to the reason why I was making this trip all the way from Ft. Collins, Colorado to Manchester, England, right... So Darren and I had been exchanging letters and he was informing me of an upcoming tour Roy would be making across England. So, like the crazy fan I was at the time, I decided to make the voyage over just to see Roy in his setting, that being in England, with his audience and fans. I knew from reading the fanzine that he rarely made tours across America, so my chances of catching a gig here were slim to none. I also found out that Roy was from Manchester, so no better place to see and experience his music live than in Manchester! The timing was right, as it fell on my Thanksgiving break, as mentioned, and it also allowed me to photograph over there 'across the pond' for my current Photography class I was taking. Still have some of those images... I should scan them and load them sometime... anyhow...

Upon arriving into London, I made the train ride up to Manchester and checked into a cheap hotel in the city. I was jet-lagged and tired, but so excited that on my 22nd Birthday, I would be witnessing somebody I had looked up to for a long time. I used to walk to walk into record stores and go straight to the 'H' for Harper section to look for new treasures waiting to be collected by myself. And as I sat there in the Manchester hotel, I remember drinking a cup of Earl Grey tea and thinking how different it tasted, how different the smells and sounds were outside when I walked out the door, how so differently the people spoke english, experiencing so many new things. Although I had travelled to Europe and England before, this time was different, my senses were alive and waiting for what they were about to experience here on this trip. In anticipation for that night's concert, I walked around the city taking photographs... just trying to calm my nerves.

In the afternoon that day, I went back to the hotel and took a brief nap, but could hardly sleep. When it was time to head over to the Free Trade Hall and meet Darren in the foyer, I nervously made my way. It was about a 20-minute walk from the hotel and I had scouted it out earlier that day so as not to be lost when trying to find it. It was a brick building with what seemed like, many windows on the front doors. When I arrived, my heart was racing... I saw one of the doors was halfway open and there were lights on inside. It was a colder, grey day, so the lights inside were inviting. I saw an older gentleman who was a security guard of some sort and I approached him and told him that I was here to meet with Darren Crisp. He replied with, "Darren? Darren who?". "Darren with Roy Harper." I replied. "Oh right, Roy Harper. Come in." He led me into a long foyer where I saw two people setting up merchandise for the show that night. Having never met Darren, I didn't know who to look for, but I just went over and asked him if he indeed was Darren Crisp, Roy's manager. He was and we shook hands and made introductions. He was with his girlfriend, Erica, who later became his wife and mother of two lovely daughters, but that's another story altogether. ;-)

I knew Darren & Erica were busy, so I just hung out and watched them setup t-shirts and other merchandise when suddenly I heard the strumming of a guitar beyond the closed doors in the concert hall. Wow, my ears had just heard Roy playing his guitar for the first time in person! I listened intently, not trying to draw any attention to myself to the others. When I heard the opening chords to 'Short and Sweet', a song which Roy had co-written with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, I was in awe. I think Darren saw my excitement and suggested I step into the Hall to see the soundcheck. I was hesitant to do so, but I drug my feet and slowly opened the door and quickly made my way to a seat in the middle of the Hall, not far from the sound mixing table, of which I saw Jacqui, Roy's wife at the time, behind the controls.

I sat there, the only one in the Hall along with a few others witnessing Roy soundcheck. At that time, his album 'Once' had been released, so I got to hear some of those songs being run through by Roy on stage. A long way from home, sitting there in the audience, listening to Roy for the first time ever live... a memory I'll never ever forget. As he finished, he stepped down and walked up the middle of the Hall, almost exactly towards where I was sitting. I waved hello and Roy waved and sat down in a seat in my aisle, but just a few seats over, in front of the mixing desk. I was trying to respect Roy and not approach him, but I had brought a photograph with me that was inspired by his music that I wanted to give to him (This later was used on early versions of Roy's web site). And I had also brought along one of my favorite album covers, 'Bullinamingvase' for him to sign. Slowly, I made my way over to him... slightly trembling and short of breathe from being so nervous... and said hello and sat down next to him. Jacqui quickly came over to mention that Roy wouldn't be talking much as he was saving his voice for the show tonight. I confirmed that I wouldn't make Roy talk much and suggested that I do most of the talking. I presented my photograph to him and explained how it was inspired by his music. He wanted to know, asking in a whisper, where I was from as he probably noticed my american accent and I told him. I also asked if he wouldn't mind signing my album cover. He whispered a yes to signing it and I pulled it out. As he was signing, I noticed his white scarf around his neck and had remembered seeing a similar one on another one of my guitar heroes, one Mr. Jimmy Page. Well, Roy was sort of shocked and asked me why I had asked him that. I told him that Jimmy has a similar one and he confirmed that it was, in fact, given to him by Jimmy. I felt awkward having asked that and just quickly informed him of my plans for the week, which included seeing him in London and Milton Keynes (Where Roy dedicated '12 Hours of Sunset' to myself... another special moment for me) later in the week. We shook hands and I exited the Hall and re-approached Darren & Erica who were almost through with setting up the merchandise stand.

I still had a few hours before the show would start and told everybody I'd be back later after getting a bite to eat. I returned later with my ticket for the show given to me by Darren earlier and took my seat. As the lights dimmed and the intro to the song 'Once' Queued up and was running, I realized I was witnessing my first of a long series of concerts given by Roy Harper. A very special night for sure and I can't thank Darren, Erica, Jacqui, Tony, Nick and Tracy enough for having invited me in to witness and 'spoke the wheel' for me writing songs of my own and just showing me a glimpse into the life of a very special creative talent. Thanks so much to all of you!

It's twenty years passed, but I still remember that cold November night as if were yesterday...

Google Street View Hits Germany with Opposition

It's been here in the United States for some time now, but now it's been mentioned that soon, this coming Novemember in fact, Google's street view will be available in Germany. People's faces, license plate numbers and other private identifying items will be blurred upon request. So far over 10,000 Objections to the Street View feature in Google have been voiced in Germany.

Google Street View Camera in Berlin, Germany

Anybody want to voice their opinion on how this street view feature could be an invasion of privacy? My first impression, as our house is represented within Google's street view, is that as long as they allow a request to be made to blur out images, then it's ok by me. For example, I didn't appreciate the fact that the inside of our garage was visible to everyone using street view for the sole purpose of possibly seeing what we have in our garage that they might like, but maybe I'm just being paranoid?

Found this out just now... Robert Plant has a song you can listen to before it's released. It's with his pre-Led Zeppelin band called Band of Joy. Angel Dance is the name of the tune... not too shabby! A little more rocking than the Alisson Kraus stuff... like it so far...

Google Looks at Long Tail Keywords Differently now

People are becoming smarter and smarter when they search online now. Instead of weeding through the search results when performing searches, a more detailed combination of keywords are being entered into their search fields. These are known as long tail keywords and since May 2010, Google is looking at these differently.

An example of a long tail keyword search:

The average person searching at the research phase will use a competitive generic keyword such as “party dress”. Not long after searching and seeing some high prices they will modify their search to something like “cheap party dress.” Now we are already into long tail keyword territory but it can go further. As the search deepens the searcher realizes that pink is the trendy colour at the moment, or pink is what she fancies wearing on her next night out, so then she is using the long tail keyword “cheap pink party dress.”

If you're interested, read more about it in an article entitled, 'The Importance Of Long Tail Keywords Since The Last Google Algorithm Update' from Site Pro News.

Fractal Images and Their Inspiration

Call me crazy, but I've become really fond of fractal imagery. I have used these images as my desktop picture on my computer for quite some time now and feel that they can really inspire me. When I'm thinking of a new design, there's something refreshing, new and exciting about fractal images that re-energizes me for coming up with that next design. I've applied this to logos and web sites alike and there really is something to it!

What are Fractals?

They can be defined as, 'a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole', according to Wikipedia's definition of fractals. They come in many different flavors, such as 'Mandelbrot', 'Newton', 'Julia', 'Halley', 'Secant', or 'Dragon' and I'll not bore you with the various reasons why. All I do know is that they are wondrous images that also occur in nature, especially in snowflakes. Fractals as Desktop Images I'll post up 3 fractal images here to get the ball rolling, so-to-speak. If there's enough interest, I'll post up more. Feel free to download them and use them for your computer desktop image, become inspired by them as I do, or share them with friends. Most of all, leave a comment if you'd like to see more of these.

Fender Strat for Sale in Denver, CO - Awesome Deal!!!

I've got one Olympic White MIM (Made in Mexico, but has American parts) Jimmie Vaughan Signature Stratocaster for sale. That's right, this one was designed by the brother of the late, great SRV, otherwise known as Stevie Ray Vaughan!

It's got great tone and playability. I've upgraded the original pick guard from single-ply to double-ply (might be triple-ply… one black layer sandwiched in 2 white layers) and have also had it professionally set-up. I hate to get rid of this gem of a guitar, but am trying to rid of some of my multiplying guitars to make room for a new one. The soft V maple neck on this one is amazing! The pickups are Tex Mex Specials and scream with tone & bite! I've got a couple stickers on the back side that add some moo, but can easily be removed if you want.

I'll also include one sweet deluxe Fender gig bag! Screaming deal, I must say so myself!
